Subject: Re: IBM TCP/IP and Trumpet Winsock
I have succeeded in running WinMosaic through Trumpet tcpman.exe over a
slip connection, but I can't get it to work on an ethernet-connected
machine. Can anyone advise?
I have a WD ethernet card installed, apparently configured for address
0xcc00 and ioaddr 0x280. I normally run OS/2 TCP/IP 2.0 with CSD applied
(no DOS/Windows support), and everything works swimmingly. I migrated
Trumpet's tcpman.exe and created a custom autoexec.bat file for it that
runs winpkt.com. This configuration works for me with slip, but bombs
with an ethernet connection. Specifically, when I launch this program
object, Trumpet Winsock Manager displays "Unable to load TCP." When I
click okay, tcpman begins to load and displays the following error
message:
> Error - Unable to locate WINPKT or PKTDRV virtual packet driver
If I had to guess, I would guess that I'm not loading a packet driver
properly or setting an address properly or something like that. But I
didn't install my own network card and I'm not sure where to look for
the information.
If you don't know what I'm doing wrong, but you have WinMosaic running
properly on an OS/2 box over ethernet, could you please send me email
describing your configuration? This may help me narrow down my choices.
Thanks,
David

Subject: Netmanage's Socket Wrencher
Has anyone else tried this set of tools for testing winsock? FTP the
file pub/winsock/socketw.exe from ftp.netmanage.com. Looks like it
could be interesting to compare the performance of different winsock
implementations.
I'd thought I'd compare Chameleon with Trumpet Winsock, but it seems
the TCP Echo tests don't work (consisently) with the latter. The other
tests show Chameleon faster than Trumpet Winsock for some block sizes,
but TW faster for other block sizes.
I was also trying to see if a larger MTU for TW could result in better
times, but didn't see a difference between the default 1500 and 4464
(this was on Token Ring).
I'd be interested in what other (more knowledgeable) people think of
these tests and what results you get with different stacks.
For what's its worth, my little test:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Chameleon 4.00.4 vs. Trumpet Winsock 1.0 beta 6
(Chameleon on left, TW on right. Over 16Mb Token Ring to host on same
subnet. Chameleon setup via NDIS; TW via packet driver.)

Thanks to the persons that have responded to my question. The problem
PPP and KA9Q which returns SPEED! (1700 cps via FTP).
And I have not even tuned it!

Subject: Finger Daemon Questions
I will be releasing v1.1 of wsfngrd in a few days and before I do so I'd like
to get a consenus on a couple of questions from anyone using this daemon.
New in 1.1
Command Line switch to hide Icon.
Returns Idle time if pc is left idle.
Increased the size of the phone field to accomodate international
users.
I am thinking about making this server more compliant with the
RFC. Currently, any finger request is serviced and a plan file
returned, period.
What I am considering:
If you finger a host running wsfngrd without a username, you'll
get basic information, username, real name, phone, idle...
If you finger that same host with a username (ie johndoe@foo.bar.com)
you'll get all the basic info, plus the plan file if it exists.
If the username isn't valid, you get Unknown user....
All comments are appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: Posting with Trumpet News Reader
Thanks to all who replied to my initial query regarding failure to post.
Someone suggested that the system administrator had to enable posting because
I was seen as an outside source. The system administrator acknowledged that
this would, indeeed, be a problem and enabled posting for me. Then the Trumpet
News Reader had "(posting allowed)" i nstead of "(no posting)".
However, when I attempted to post again, I got the familiar "Posting failed"
notice and still cannot post. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
